Can I Bring My Dog Hiking?

It is important to recognize that not all dogs are capable of hiking, especially on rocky steep mountain trails. Be realistic about what you are asking your pet to do. Do not overestimate your dog's capabilities, even if he or she is regularly active. Any dog that has health issues or is not physically fit enough to exercise all day and endure temperature fluctuations might not make the best hiking buddy. Consider the terrain and weather conditions of that specific trail. Check with your vet to see if your dog is ready to go on a hike.

Trail Etiquette for Hiking With a Dog

Communicate proactively. When you meet someone on the trail, let them know that your dog is friendly and communicate that calmness to the dog. Keep your dog under control and not try to manage more than one dog at a time. Protect the wildlife and do not let your dog stray off the trail to chase animals, run through the foliage, or play in water.
